Doctoral Consortium

C&T 2009 will include a doctoral consortium (DC). A DC is a workshop in which advanced PhD students present their dissertation research to a group including both peers and faculty/professionals. The faculty act as advisors toward the whole group, encouraging, coaching and provoking discussion. The group tries to provide constructive criticism and guidance. DCs have become popular in recent years; and my own experience is that they can be very useful to the students, and interesting for the advisors.

The DC will occur the day before the conference begins (June 24) - the same day as the workshops. It will include 8 students and 3-4 advisors (to be announced).

Submission
Students applying to the DC are expected to have finished their dissertation proposals and to be one year or less from obtaining the Ph.D. degree. The applicant should have conducted a significant enough piece of research to understand how his or her work fits within the C&T field, how to do research, and how to present it. Students can be from any discipline.

The submission materials are (a) extended abstract of the applicant's dissertation research (2 pages), (b) a letter of recommendation from the applicant's research advisor, (c) a poster that will be presented at the Conference, and (d) curriculum vitae. These four parts should be submitted together as email attachments to jcarroll@ist.psu.edu.

Support
We have obtained some support for this event from the US National Science Foundation (NSF). This will include on-site support (registration, lodging, meals) for all students accepted to the consortium, and will also provide travel support for US students who are accepted.
